Remarks

The New Handbook of Texas reports that this community was founded in 1886, meaning that the Santa Fe established the station in a previously unsettled area. The town was renamed Benoit in 1906 when a post office was established, named in honor of an early settler. W. F. Hill opened the first store in 1912 and was the last postmaster. At its peak the settlement had two stores, a cotton gin, a blacksmith shop and a one room schoolhouse. The population was reported at 100 in 1940, but by 1950 the community had disappeared. The last store was demolished when the San Angelo highway was paved through this area.
